Lord Elis-Thomas, the Assembly’s ‘speaker’, stuck his nose where it was wanted yesterday, into a debate about a standards commissioner for Assembly Members. More here from David Williamson.

“We are discussing this issue at a time when a storm is brewing in another place,” Dafydd El told the committee looking into the matter. “It’s important that we in the process of amending this measure do take the opportunity.”

According to the plan, the new commissioner will have powers to be pro-active in identifying naughty boys and girls in Cardiff Bay and will have a defined relationship with the chief executive of the Assembly itself.

Dafydd El’s post-expensegate leadership is to be welcomed. It’s slightly regrettable that the Scottish Parliament got its hoose in order some time ago when it comes to transparency and we didn’t. It’s even more regrettable that we needed a new system in the first place: what could be more clear than ‘only claim for things that are wholly needed for your duties’?
